TOP 10 REASONS WHY I LOVE SORSOGON

Sorsogon is not just a province or city that I can call, it’s my HOME.

To give you an idea, SORSOGON is a province in the Philippines located in Bicol Region (Region V). It has 14 small towns, 1 city, and 541 barangays. The people of Sorsogon are called Sorsogueños. The spoken languages are Bicol, Tagalog, Sorsoganon, and English.

There are hundreds of reasons why I love Sorsogon and as I share the Top 10 of it, I hope you’ll experience the joy and excitement that this district offers.

1. JUAG FISH SANCTUARY

img_20160402_134837.jpg

An area in Matnog Sorsogon where fishes and other marine life are breeds, protected and sheltered. This was previously featured on my post for Subic Beach Matnog SorsogonI was lucky enough to feed the fishes and see how well the people manage the sanctuary. The local government has a good system, thus it promotes the protection and diversity of marine life, elevates tourism, and helps improve the livelihood of the local community.

2. BULUSAN LAKE

If you want to experience a place surrounded by a tropical rain forest, you have to visit Bulusan Lake.

Bulusan Lake is located on Luzon Island in the Philippines. It will take 16 hours of travel from Manila to Bulusan if you do it by land, however, if you do it by plane, it will only be 3-4 hours. What’s good about visiting Bulusan is the experience and tranquillity you will get. It is a suitable place for recollection and self-reflection as you can feel the serene and natural beauty of the lake and the forest. The lush growth of trees and plants, beehives, birds, mammals, fishes and other marine life are the things to look forward in this lake.

Some of the various activities that you can try in this place are boat riding, kayaking, and hiking. There’s an Eco trail for trekking if you’re looking for adventure and if you prefer hiking and climbing. It will take an hour to finish the trek, and some prefer this activity to fully enjoy the surroundings. It is also a different experience when you try boat riding or kayaking in the mystical lake of Bulusan as the green water and healthy green plants add magic to this place. You can chill and listen to the birds chirping and inhale the freshness of the air.

3. PAGURIRAN ISLAND

How can I forget the first jump I ever did in my life? I was part of girl scout club way back in high-school, though many of my classmates are afraid to try it, and even if I don’t know how to swim, I still jump and trust that the facilitator will take care of me once I’m in the water. It is indeed a scary feeling yet the thrill and excitement helped me not to resist from jumping.

If you want to visit this site, you can go to Bacon Sorsogon. Paguriran is like a large pool naturally made by nature and surrounded by rocks and plants. It may be a bit far from the city but it’s worth visiting.

What’s making this island special and unusual from other islands is the lagoon. It has green emerald shallow water favourable for children and nonswimmers. You can rent a cottage and bring your own food. No corkage fees and entrance fees are very affordable for everyone.

4. SORSOGON BAYWALK

Also known as “rompeolas” is one of my favourite spots in the province. This is the place where I run every morning, the place where I hang out with my childhood friends and classmates, the place where I eat street foods and drink with friends during the October festival (Kasanggayahan Festival). You can rent a kayak and enjoy watching the sun goes down below its horizon.

Sorsogon bay walk is located in the city of Sorsogon. You can rent a tricycle or just walk from the city proper going to the bay walk. It will only take you 10 -15 minutes walk.

5. RIZAL BEACH

Rizal Beach is one of the unspoiled beaches in the province of Sorsogon. It’s just 30-45 minutes away from the city proper of Sorsogon. It is memorable to me as my late father takes our whole family to this place every summer and every time we need “Vitamin Sea”. It has a powder white sand and a long stretch of shore. I love night swimming with my siblings and sometimes with my childhood friends. We lie down on the shore, watch the moon and do star-gazing.

Cottages and hotels are very affordable in this place.

6. SORSOGON CHURCH (Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral)

img_20160501_083800.jpg

The Diocese of Sorsogon which is founded in 1968 is a highlight of the city. It is a significant place for Catholics to pray and worship. One can simply fall in love with the structural designs and the glass windows inside the church. When the typhoon hit Sorsogon a few years ago, the church was totally ruined. The people of Sorsogon were saddened with what happened, and they gave contributions during the mass for the renovation of the church. Some engineer and architect offered their services for free as what I’ve heard, and after few years, the church was fully renovated.

I have visited this place twice when I was just a young little girl. I can still remember the beaches and coves which made Sta. Magdalena famous to Bicolanos. It may be not known and popular to some people outside the Bicol region but it’s a must visit place for those who loves beach and coves. Also, favorable for people who wants some quiet and peaceful provincial vacation.

Sta. Magdalena is located in the southernmost tips of Luzon and it’s a fifth class municipality in the province of Sorsogon.

Olango Beach, Villa Veronica, Balading, Talaonganan Beach, Liang are top places to visit in Sta. Magdalena

Travel Guide: Subic Beach Matnog Sorsogon

Subic Beach is one of the places that I always love to go back. I was 10 years old when I first visited this place and though very young, I have never forgotten it. Subic beach is found at Calintaan Island of Matnog Sorsogon. Matnog is a third class municipality of Sorsogon, which is part of Bicol Region. It is actually my second home as this is the place of my father and grandparents.

Last March 27, I went to Subic beach with my best friend and her workmates. I was really excited for this trip as I wanted to see the changes of this place after 18 years. We left Sorsogon around 9:00AM and arrived at Matnog’s port past 10:00 in the morning. We had several stops over as we bought some snacks and other stuff. We proceed to the tourism office and paid 70.00 pesos each ( Php 50.00 entrance fee + Php 20.00 environmental fee). We were given a guide and he lead us where the boat is located. Note that we charter a small boat for island hopping and transfer going to the Subic beach. Tour rate varies if it’s a day tour or overnight stays. In our case, we paid Php 2000.00 because we stayed overnight on the island.

OUR ISLAND HOPPING ADVENTURE

We stayed for few minutes here to take some photos and roam around this spot. You can see a store here where you can buy cold juices and snacks. Some people are camping, having picnics on the shaded area and some are swimming.

2nd stop: Juag Fish Sanctuary

Juag fish sanctuary is one of the highlights of this tour. You will be astonished by the aggressive milk fish and big size lapu-lapu (grouper). Our very kind kuya the boatman is feeding the fishes while I’m busy taking photos and videos 🙂 I paid Php 100.00 for the fish food.

3rd stop: At the Cave

I’m not sure of the exact name of this cave but they said it’s called the “Calintaan Cave“. Correct me if I’m wrong guys 🙂

After the tour, we proceed to Subic beach. We stayed at Holy Trinity beach resort and I would definitely recommend this place. They have air conditioned rooms, cottages, pool, stores and complete utensils for visitors who want to cook and grill. You can also pay the staff for Php 150.oo to cook for your rice and preferred dish (you can buy rice, fresh meat and fish in the market of Matnog’s port).
