Sorsogon is not just a province or city that I can call, it’s my home.
To give you an idea, SORSOGON is a province in the Philippines located in Bicol Region (Region V). It has 14 small towns, 1 city, and 541 barangays. The people of Sorsogon are called Sorsogueños. The spoken languages are Bicol, Tagalog, Sorsoganon, and English.
There are hundreds of reasons why I love Sorsogon and as I share the Top 10 of it, I hope you’ll experience the joy and excitement that this city offers.
1. JUAG FISH SANCTUARY
An area in Matnog Sorsogon where fishes and other marine life are breeds, protected and sheltered. This was previously featured on my post for Subic Beach Matnog Sorsogon. I was lucky enough to feed the fishes and see how well the people manage the sanctuary. The local government has a good system, thus it promotes the protection and diversity of marine life, elevates tourism, and helps improve the livelihood of the local community.
2. BULUSAN LAKE
If you want to experience a place surrounded by a tropical rain forest, you have to visit Bulusan Lake.
Bulusan Lake is located on Luzon Island in the Philippines. It will take 16 hours of travel from Manila to Bulusan if you do it by land, however, if you do it by plane, it will only be 3-4 hours. What’s good about visiting Bulusan is the experience and tranquility you will get. It is a suitable place for recollection and self-reflection as you can feel the serene and natural beauty of the lake and the forest. The lush growth of trees and plants, beehives, birds, mammals, fishes and other marine life are the things to look forward in this lake.
Some of the various activities that you can try in this place are boat riding, kayaking, and hiking. There’s an Eco trail for trekking if you’re looking for adventure and if you prefer hiking and climbing. It will take an hour to finish the trek, and some prefer this activity to fully enjoy the surroundings. It is also a different experience when you try boat riding or kayaking in the mystical lake of Bulusan as the green water and healthy green plants add magic to this place. You can chill and listen to the birds chirping and inhale the freshness of the air.
3. PAGURIRAN ISLAND
How can I forget the first jump I ever did in my life? I was part of girl scout club way back in high-school, though many of my classmates are afraid to try it, and even if I don’t know how to swim, I still jump and trust that the facilitator will take care of me once I’m in the water. It is indeed a scary feeling yet the thrill and excitement helped me not to resist from jumping.
If you want to visit this site, you can go to Bacon Sorsogon. Paguriran is like a large pool naturally made by nature and surrounded by rocks and plants. It may be a bit far from the city but it’s worth visiting.
What’s making this island special and unusual from other islands is the lagoon. It has green emerald shallow water favorable for children and non-swimmers. You can rent a cottage and bring your own food. No corkage fee, and entrance fees are very affordable for everyone.
4. SORSOGON BAYWALK
Also known as “rompeolas” is one of my favorite spots in the province. This is the place where I run every morning, the place where I hang out with my childhood friends and classmates, the place where I eat street foods and drink with friends during the October festival (Kasanggayahan Festival). You can rent a kayak and enjoy watching the sun goes down below its horizon.
Sorsogon bay-walk is located in the city of Sorsogon. You can rent a tricycle or just walk from the city proper going to the bay-walk. It will only take you 10 -15 minutes to go there.
5. RIZAL BEACH
Rizal Beach is one of the unspoiled beaches in the province of Sorsogon. It’s just 30-45 minutes away from the city proper of Sorsogon. It is memorable to me as my late father takes our whole family to this place every summer and every time we need “Vitamin Sea”. It has a powder white sand and a long stretch of shore. I love night swimming with my siblings and sometimes with my childhood friends. We lie down on the shore, watch the moon and do star-gazing.
Cottages and hotels are very affordable in this place.

6. SORSOGON CHURCH (Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral)
The Diocese of Sorsogon which is founded in 1968 is a highlight of the city. It is a significant place for Catholics to pray and worship. One can simply fall in love with the structural designs and the glass windows inside the church. When the typhoon hit Sorsogon a few years ago, the church was totally ruined. The people of Sorsogon were saddened with what happened and they gave contributions and donations for the renovation of the church. Some engineer and architect offered their services for free as what I’ve heard, and after few years, the church was fully renovated.
7. STA. MAGDALENA
I have visited this place twice when I was just a young little girl. I can still remember the beaches and coves which made Sta. Magdalena famous to Bicolanos. It may be not known and popular to some people outside the Bicol region but it’s a must visit place for those who loves beach and coves. Also, favorable for people who wants some quiet and peaceful provincial vacation.
Sta. Magdalena is located in the southernmost tips of Luzon and it’s a fifth class municipality in the province of Sorsogon.
Olango Beach, Villa Veronica, Balading, Talaonganan Beach, Liang are top places to visit in Sta. Magdalena
8. SUBIC WHITE BEACH
Who wouldn’t love to swim in blue crystal clear water?
The Subic white beach is now one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines. Its white sand, clean water, and good location away from the noise of the city give tourists a chance to enjoy its quiet and still atmosphere.
You can pitch a tent, rent a cottage, and book your desired resorts. Also, island hopping, fish feeding, snorkeling, banana boat, diving, Jet Ski are available in this place.
9. LOLA SAYONG ECO-SURF CAMP
If you love surfing and enjoy the waves, Lola Sayong is the right place for you. This place is now popular to surfer fans and tourists from the other parts of the world. The friendly locals, amazing view, clean beach, and an accessible location are the things to look forward in this place.
Donsol is famous not only because of the Bicolano delicacies but because of “BUTANDING” or whale shark which made it a world- class tourist destination. It is now known as the “Whale Shark Capital of the World.”
If you want an encounter with the amazing and friendly whale sharks, you have to visit the place from December to May, as these are the best months to see the whale sharks. You can stay at Amor Farm Beach Resort and Woodland Beach resort, these are the popular hotels in Donsol. Night firefly tour and shrimp catching are also some of the activities you can try other than diving and snorkeling.
